Construction, layout and the way people use a space all shape its cellular coverage challenges. Start with the places that matter to your business.

Offices & workplaces

Reception should not depend on a seat by the window. Meeting rooms, interior offices and lower floors can sit behind materials that weaken outdoor cellular signals.

Identify the rooms people use most, the carriers used by employees and visitors, and any restrictions on cabling in occupied spaces.

Planning example

A team can take calls near the windows but leaves an interior meeting room to speak with clients. Rather than treating the entire office as one coverage zone, a useful brief identifies the meeting rooms, shared desks and circulation areas separately. Include visitor networks as a question, not an assumption about universal support.

Questions to bring

  • Which enclosed rooms interrupt mobile use, and are they included in a planned fit-out?
  • Who can approve access above ceilings, and when are occupied rooms available?

Warehouses

Metal cladding, racking and large internal distances can make reception uneven across a warehouse. Conditions near loading doors may differ from those deeper inside.

Consider working zones, ceiling heights, cable routes and how the storage layout may change. A large advertised coverage area is not a substitute for site planning.

Planning example

A loading entrance appears to have reception, but staff report difficulty further along the aisles. Distinguish the loading area, picking zones and attached offices in the brief. If handheld equipment is involved, confirm whether it uses cellular or Wi-Fi before treating it as part of the same problem.

  • Which working zones take priority over general storage space?
  • Are racking changes planned, and what access restrictions could affect antenna or cable placement?

Industrial facilities

Steel structures, machinery and separated work areas can complicate signal paths. Cellular connectivity needs should be considered alongside site access and operating requirements.

Identify the specific occupied areas and devices that need service. Cellular enhancement is not a safety-system guarantee or a replacement for dedicated operational communications.

Planning example

An operations team wants ordinary mobile calls in a separated workshop and administrative area. Describe those needs independently from any dedicated operational or safety communications. A commercial cellular proposal should not quietly absorb systems with different requirements simply because they share the same building.

  • Which devices and mobile networks are relevant to the proposed coverage areas?
  • What site-access rules and responsible building contacts need to be identified before any visit?

Retail premises

A street-facing entrance can have usable reception while checkout areas, stockrooms or interior units do not. Shopping centres may introduce shared-property constraints.

Separate mobile-network issues from Wi-Fi or payment-network problems. Confirm which connections a business-critical device actually uses.

Planning example

A shop has good mobile reception at the entrance but staff struggle in a rear stockroom. A failed checkout transaction is a separate diagnostic question until its connection type is known. Scope the cellular need around the people and spaces affected, rather than promising that a booster will repair the payment system.

  • Is the affected device using cellular, Wi-Fi or a wired connection?
  • Does the lease allow access beyond the unit, and who controls shared roof or riser space?

Hospitality properties

Guest rooms, meeting spaces and back-of-house areas can present different coverage priorities. Multi-floor construction and carrier diversity add complexity.

Define priority spaces and the networks relevant to guests and staff. Indoor cellular enhancement and a guest Wi-Fi network solve different problems.

Planning example

A property receives complaints about mobile calls in some guest rooms while its meeting spaces have different needs. Group the reported areas by floor and use, without gathering identifying guest information. Keep guest Wi-Fi questions separate, and avoid assuming that one successful phone test represents every visitor’s carrier.

Multi-tenant commercial buildings

Tenants may use different carriers, work on different schedules and have different expectations. Shared risers and equipment areas require property-level coordination.

Consider landlord permissions, tenant access, responsibilities and future fit-outs. System architecture should follow the building’s requirements, not a universal size threshold.

Planning example

One tenant reports weak reception, while another asks about coverage during a future fit-out. Decide whether the conversation concerns a single tenancy or a property-wide plan. A shared system raises questions about permissions, coverage boundaries and ongoing responsibility that should be settled explicitly rather than inherited from one tenant’s request.

  • Who can authorize access to shared spaces and coordinate with other tenants?
  • Which current and planned tenancies belong in the scope, and who would hold the system information?
